The United Football League (UFL), set to commence on March 30th, 2024, marks a significant evolution in spring football. This league emerges from the consolidation of two prominent leagues: the XFL and the USFL. Comprising eight teams, the UFL will broadcast its games on major networks like FOX, ABC, and ESPN, promising widespread exposure and excitement for fans of the sport.

Team Histories in Brief

  1. Arlington Renegades – Originating from the XFL in 2020, the Renegades have established themselves as a team with a solid foundation coached by Bob Stoops, they won the XFL Championship in 2023.
  2. Houston Roughnecks – The Houston Roughnecks, an XFL team based in Houston, Texas, were established as part of the league’s reform in 2018. They achieved an undefeated 5-0 record in the curtailed 2020 season. As of the 2023 season, under coach Wade Phillips, the Roughnecks had a strong performance with 7 wins and 3 losses​​​​​​.
  3. San Antonio Brahmas – The Brahmas, an XFL team created in 2023, play their home games at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Although they had a challenging inaugural season in 2023 with a 3-7 record, the team, led by coach Hines Ward, demonstrated potential for growth in the new league. Wade Phillips replaced Ward as head coach at the end of the 2023 season.
  4. St. Louis Battlehawks – Based in St. Louis, Missouri, the Battlehawks are known for their strong fan support and competitive play. They have a regular season record of 10-5, one of the best in the XFL in 2023. The team, founded by Vince McMahon and now owned by Dwayne Johnson, plays home games at The Dome at America’s Center. They have a notable rivalry with the DC Defenders and are recognized for leading the league in social media followers and fan attendance.
  5. DC Defenders – Playing out of Washington, D.C., and competing in the XFL in 2020, the Defenders have the highest win percentage among current XFL teams, tied with the Houston Roughnecks. They play their home games at Audi Field and are know for the fans Beer Snake. The Defenders are known for a strong rivalry with the St. Louis Battlehawks, with all matchups being closely contested.
  6. Birmingham Stallions – In the 2023 season, the Birmingham Stallions, playing their home games at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, won the USFL Championship for a second straight season. The Stallions had a popular stint during the original USFL in the 1980s and were known for their strong performance and viability as a team​​​​​​.
  7. Michigan Panthers – The Michigan Panthers, based in the Detroit area, played at the Pontiac Silverdome. They won the inaugural USFL Championship in the 1980s. In the 2023 season, they improved from their previous season’s record, reaching the playoffs but losing in the North Division Championship Game​​​​​​​​​​​​.
  8. Memphis Showboats – The 2023 Memphis Showboats season, their inaugural season in the USFL, ended with a 5-5 record, placing them 4th in the South Division. The Showboats play their home games at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, under the leadership of head coach Todd Haley​​.
