Three undefeated teams remain after the first four weeks of the 2024 season in the European League of Football. The first-year upstart Madrid Bravos continued undefeated after defeating the Cologne Centurions on the road. Despite losing quarterback Ben Holmes, the Vienna Vikings continue to do enough to pick up wins and remain at the top of the Eastern Conference. Stuttgart is also undefeated as they work to put themselves in a position to return to the playoffs and contend for an ELF championship for a second season in a row.
During Week 4, several teams and players reestablished themselves as top performers in the ELF, including running backs Glen Toonga of the Rhein Fire and Dwayne Obi of the Madrid Bravos. Others, like quarterback Steven Duncan, continue to play at a high level even though they have changed teams early in the season. Also, similar to Week 3 of the ELF, wide receivers emerged as top threats, including Jakob Neugebauer of the Hamburg Sea Devils, compiling 230 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Let’s take a closer look at the results of the eight games played during the fourth season of the ELF. Remember, all ELF games can be watched live each week on the ELF Game Pass.
Rhein Fire (3-1) 19, Paris Musketeers (2-1) 14
The Rhein Fire were able to bounce back from their Week 3 home loss to the Madrid Bravos by traveling to Paris and knocking off the undefeated Musketeers. Fire quarterback Jadrian Clark struggled to get in a rhythm passing the ball, but Fire running back Glen Toonga led the way with over 200 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards. Quarterback Zach Edwards threw an interception late in the 4th quarter to allow the Fire to seal the win on the road.
Madrid Bravos (3-0) 35, Cologne Centurions (1-2) 24
The Madrid Bravos kept their hot start to the 2024 season going despite a change at quarterback, with Steven Duncan throwing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. Cologne, due to the efforts of running back Gerald Ameln, the Centurions did stay in the game with the Bravos until late into the fourth quarter. Madrid is one of three teams in the ELF that are still undefeated this season.
Vienna Vikings (4-0) 25, Berlin Thunder (2-2) 20
The Vienna Vikings, a team that has shown remarkable resilience, have maintained their perfect record through Week 4, despite the challenge of playing several quarterbacks. This week, Shelton Eppler led the Viking’s offense and, despite a slow start, finished the game with two touchdown passes to help Vienna come from behind and defeat the Thunder. Berlin led most of the game against the Vikings, thanks to a strong performance by quarterback Jakeb Sullivan, but they were not able to hang on in the second half against an effective Vikings offense.
Barcelona Dragons (2-2) 14, Helvetic Mercenaries (0-3) 12
The Barcelona Dragons, with their strategic play, and quarterback Levi Lewis, picked up their second win of the season. Barcelona has defeated the Mercenaries twice this season to get their two wins. Helvetic quarterback Carlton Aiken Jr. struggled to ignite the Mercenaries passing game, but he ran the ball for over 100 yards and two touchdowns. Dragons quarterback Lewis also ran the ball in for a touchdown, but down the stretch of the game the Barcelona quarterback did a better job getting the ball to his weapons on offense.
Frankfurt Galaxy (1-2) 20, Panthers Wroclaw (1-3) 10
After struggling to pick up wins during the first two games of this season, the Frankfurt Galaxy were able to break through and win against the Panthers Wroclaw. Galaxy quarterback Luke Zahradka connected with receivers Nico Strahmann and Markell Castle for touchdowns. The Panthers started the game slowly on offense and struggled with turnovers, giving the Galaxy a chance to win their first game of 2024.
Stuttgart Surge (3-0) 55, Milano Seamen (1-3) 9
Despite their first win last week, the Milano Seamen needed help to maintain their momentum when they faced the formidable Stuttgart Surge. The Surge, led by quarterback Reilly Hennessey, showcased a dominant performance, dissecting the Milano defense with 25 out of 31 passes completed, resulting in four touchdowns. Hennessey’s connection with Louis Geyer for three touchdowns and 121 yards was an exceptional performance in the game. Despite the seamen’s efforts, including a touchdown pass from quarterback Zach Bronkhorst to wide receiver Juan Calderon, they could not match the Surge’s performance.
Raiders Tirol (3-1) 29, Munich Ravens (2-2) 26
The Raiders Tirol are yet another team in the ELF that has continued to pick up wins despite a lack of stability at their quarterback positions. This week, quarterback N’Kosi Perry stepped in for the Raiders and found wide receiver Darion Chafin for a touchdown pass. Raiders running back Tobias Bonatti had an exceptional day, scoring three touchdowns to lead the Raiders to a win against the Ravens. Munich came up short in their effort to pick up another win despite the success of quarterback Chad Jefferies and wide receiver Marvin Rutsch.
Hamburg Sea Devils (2-1) 27, Prague Lions (0-4) 17
The Hamburg Sea Devils picked up their second win of the season, both against the Prague Lions, with an explosive performance by quarterback Javarian Smith and wide receiver Jakob Neugebauer. Neugebauer posted 230 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns. Lions running back Tyrese Johnson-Fischer had some success against the Sea Devils defense, helping Prague get on the scoreboard. Still, Hamburg had too much firepower on offense for the Lions defense.
