There was a point in time when the Houston Roughnecks taking on the Birmingham Stallions didn’t seem like a huge game.

Times have changed.

With only one game separating the two in the USFL Conference standings, this game has serious playoff implications

Week 6 USFL Conference Standings

Let’s not forget what happened last time these two teams met, either.

The Stallions got the victory, but it was a one-point game headed into the 4th quarter.

Houston Roughnecks

The Roughnecks are 3–3 this year, but all of their wins came against teams that are 1–4 (San Antonio and Memphis).

This is a chance for them to make a big statement by knocking off the Stallions and staying in the thick of the playoff race.

This game is vital for the Roughnecks’ playoff ambitions. A loss doesn’t eliminate them, but it would make their road a heck of a lot harder.

A Roughnecks loss and a Michigan win would put them 2 games back with only 3 games to go.

Keys to victory

  1. Get to the QB: The Stallions’ offensive line has been frustratingly inconsistent.
  • Weeks 1, 5, and 6: 15 sacks allowed
  • Weeks 2–4, 0 sacks allowed

Getting pressure on Case Cookus will make the Roughnecks’ job a lot easier.

2. Win the Special Teams: This season, the Stallions always seem to win the field position battle. That’s helped cover up some of their offensive struggles. If the Houston special teams can make Birmingham drive the entire field, their chances for victory go up considerably.

3. Passing Attack: Birmingham has the # 1 rush defense in the UFL, but their passing defense isn’t quite as strong. They have given up some big plays in the passing game before.

Birmingham Stallions

The QB carousel in Birmingham has been tough to watch.

Case Cookus looked much more comfortable in start number two. Hopefully, that improvement will be even greater in week three.

This is a big game for Birmingham. A loss doesn’t kill their playoff hopes by any means. But this late in the season, teams want to start peaking. Nobody wants to back into the postseason struggling.

Keys to victory

  1. Take care of the ball: Last week’s victory over San Antonio was the first game this year without a Birmingham INT. That’s a stat they would love to repeat.
  2. Establish the run: Cookus does amazing things at times, but you don’t want to put everything on his shoulders. Establishing the run game with Person Jr. and Marable will take a lot of the pressure off Cookus.
  3. Defense and Special teams: Their job is simple, keep doing what they’re doing. Both the defense and special teams have been playing lights out this season.
