As UFL players begin making their way to report for training camp at the Arlington Hub, several more players have opted for retirement prior to the 2025 season. With UFL teams currently fine-tuning the back end of their rosters, the recent retirements could force UFL GMs to make some last second adjustments for the upcoming season.
Clint Sigg Houston Roughnecks
Sigg has been a personal friend of mine since 2022 and spent Two years in spring football playing with the Gamblers (USFL) AND Roughnecks (UFL). Sigg opts for retirement after his release from Houston during the summer of 2024. A key piece in Curtis Johnson’s Offense, Sigg was instrumental as a lead-blocker in the Gamblers/Roughnecks rushing attack that saw RB Mark Thompson win 2023 Offensive Player of the Year.
Ethan Greenidge Arlington Renegades
Coming from FCS Villanova, Greenidge was a longshot to play professional football. Despite coming from a small school in the CAA, Greenidge managed to spend 2019 to 2023 on NFL payrolls, appearing in 15 games in his career. After an injury in 2023, Greenidge opted to join the UFL’s Arlington Renegades in December of 2024 in an effort to reinvigorate his football career. Greenidge ultimately decided against continuing his career retiring prior to training camp.
Jordan Ferguson San Antonio Brahmas
Ferguson has been a fan favorite since his emergence in spring football in 2023. After only playing in Four games in 2023 for Memphis, Ferguson was a key piece for the Showboats Defense totaling 45 tackles, and 5 sacks in 2024. This past off-season Ferguson was traded to the Brahmas in exchange for QB Quinten Dormady, however, has opted to retire prior to training camp.
Sean Mahone Michigan Panthers
Mahone has been with the Michigan Panthers since 2022, signing with the team during his “true rookie” season after coming out of WVU as a UDFA. Mahone has been a key member in Michigan’s Defensive Backfield, especially the past two seasons. Over his career in the USFL/UFL Mahone has totaled 75 tackles, and a 1.0 sack for the Panthers since 2022. Mahone had recently signed his LOI to return in August of 2024, opening one free roster spot for training camp 2025.
Robert Barnes San Antonio Brahmas
Barnes was a new face in the 2024 Brahmas Defense serving as a reserve LB for Wade Philips. The former Colorado/Oklahoma LB appeared in all 12 games for the Brahmas in 2024 totaling 19 tackles as a reserve LB. Barnes retires after 1 season as pro.
With UFL Training camp creeping up, players continue to weigh the options of what the next step in life entails moving forward. With salaries always a topic of conversation many mainstays of the league will continue to transition to hire paying opportunities in an effort to provide for themselves and families. Last season between the USFL-XFL merger and a lack of improvements in salaries many players found themselves looking for the next objective, making the hard choice to hang up the helmet. With training camp rapidly approaching more retirements are likely to be announced.
