According to a report by CBS Sports Sacramento State has selected Zach Potter as its general manager, partnering with new head coach Brennan Marion. Potter joins the Hornets after directing the Birmingham Stallions to three consecutive championships.
Potter’s path to Sacramento State includes success in talent acquisition and team building with the Stallions. His career started at Iowa Western Community College (IWCC), where he completed his associate degree while earning his high school diploma. At IWCC, Potter worked with the football program under coach Scott Strohmeier.
Following IWCC, Potter pursued NFL opportunities, interviewing with the Minnesota Vikings for an entry-level position. He was deemed overqualified and not hired. He then gained experience at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2020, working on Scott Frost’s staff with offensive coordinator Matt Lubick. During this time, Potter built connections with The Spring League and former USFL President Brian Woods. He gained professional football experience as a Personnel Assistant with The Spring League in spring 2021.
Potter became the GM of the Birmingham Stallions at age 21. His roster decisions brought in players like Deon Cain, Bo Scarbrough, Adrian Martinez, Alex McGough and Jace Sternberger, who contributed to the team’s championship runs.
The move to Sacramento State marks Potter’s transition to NCAA football management. His track record includes three titles with Birmingham across USFL and UFL competition. The Hornets gain Potter’s experience in talent evaluation and roster construction as they build their program under Marion’s leadership.
The big question for Stallions fans is what does it mean for the future of the team. We assume he will be leaving his role as GM for Birmingham. United Football League General Managers are the only full time paid position within the UFL. Since these teams already have thin staffs, there is no air-apparent.
It will be interesting to see who head coach Skip Holtz brings in and if they can continue their Championship run for one more season.
