In the world of sports, teams often make personnel decisions that seem puzzling to those outside the organization. When you look deeper at the situation, you find that teams are making specific decisions because they suspect they need something else but are unsure of how to find what the Brahmas coaching staff are looking for, so the team’s personnel moves become challenging to understand. The San Antonio Brahmas have arguably one of the best wide receivers in the UFL, with Jontre Kirklin and Marquez Stevenson leading the way for the Brahmas receiver corps.

Earlier this week, the San Antonio Brahmas released wide receiver Juwan Green from their training camp roster. While the team or coaching staff did not explain, they did not see Green as a good fit for their offense. So, with a roster spot opened for training camp, they created the flexibility to address the needs of their current roster. Instead, the Brahmas have decided to sign wide receiver Jaelen Gill, according to a press release from the UFL. Gill brings a background that is very similar to Green’s, except that Green had more experience at the professional level. So it seems that the Brahmas perceive that they need another receiver to earn a role to help make their group of receivers more complete.

Jaelen Gill comes to the UFL and the San Antonio Brahmas after spending the 2024 NFL season with the Los Angeles Chargers. Like Juwan Green, Gill was a standout in college and used that success to earn an NFL opportunity. Gill now finds himself coming into a loaded receiver room with the Brahmas, needing to learn a new offense on the fly during the 2nd week of training camp in the UFL.

The 6’0″, 185-pound Gill started his journey into professional football when he played for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2018 until 2019. While playing for the Buckeyes, Gill played in eight games and caught seven passes for 62 yards and one touchdown. After the 2019 season, Gill transferred to Boston College in the ACC.

Gill played in 32 games for the Boston College Eagles from 2020 until 2022. While playing for Boston College, Gill caught 80 passes for 1,092 yards and scored two touchdowns. In addition to his success as a wide receiver, Gill returned 28 kicks for 572 yards and one kickoff for a touchdown, and he also returned 19 punts for 125 yards.

In 2023, Gill transferred once again to Fresno State. During the 2023 season, Gill played in 13 games for the Bulldogs, catching 50 passes for 525 yards and six touchdowns. He also ran the ball 10 times for 24 yards. He returned 23 kicks and one punt while playing at Fresno State.

Brahmas Release Long Snapper Dalton Godfrey

In addition to shuffling the deck at receiver during the 2nd week of training camp, the Brahmas have also decided to release long snapper Dalton Godfrey, according to the most recent UFL press release.

It is unusual for the Brahmas to release their only long snapper this far into training camp, but it is a sign that a better option could be available very soon. Last season, Rex Sunahara served as the Brahmas long snapper and quickly established himself as one of the top long snappers in the UFL. Sunahara’s success earned him an opportunity with the Cleveland Browns during the 2024 NFL season. There is a chance that Godfrey was released to create space to re-sign Sunahara, but this situation appears to be very fluid for the Brahmas.
