During the day on Friday, leaks were released about the free agents that the San Antonio Brahmas are signing to start free agency. A few of those players were running back John Lovett, All-XFL defensive tackle Caeveon Patton, and former Green Bay Packer Vernon Scott. Well, those signings were just the tip of the iceberg; later in the day, the UFL sent a press release showing several players that UFL had added to their rosters.
The San Antonio Brahmas have added 18 additional players. Running back John Lovett and defensive back Vernon Scott are included in this list, but we still need to include defensive lineman Caeveon Patton. The list consists of former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Chase Garbers, which should add some competition to the Brahmas quarterback room. With these additional players, the Brahmas gain several new potential playmakers to add explosive elements to their offense and defense.
We are going to unpack the newest additions to the Brahmas roster.
New Additions To the Brahmas Offense
During the first week of free agency, the Brahmas added nine new players to their offense. Among those new additions are a quarterback, a running back, three wide receivers, and four offensive linemen.
Quarterback Chase Garbers and running back John Lovett are the newest players added to the Brahmas offensive backfield, and both bring NFL experience. The 6’2″, 215-pound quarterback Garbers played college football at California and spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders. Lovett comes to San Antonio after playing with the Vegas Vipers in 2023; he spent time with the Carolina Panthers in 2022 and finished his college football career at Penn State.
The Brahmas also added three wide receivers to their roster. Jontre Kirklin played college football at LSU and played with the Houston Roughnecks in 2023, and he also spent time with the New Orleans Saints in 2023. Alize Mack returns to San Antonio after playing tight end with the Brahmas in 2023 and spent time with the Tennessee Titans in 2023. Marquez Stevenson is a wide receiver who returns to Texas after playing college football at the University of Houston; he spent the 2021 season with the Buffalo Bills.
San Antonio added four offensive linemen to the Brahmas roster. Those linemen are Greg Eiland, Chuck Filiaga, Derrick Kelly, and Jarrid Williams. All four linemen bring a wealth of NFL experience, and Kelly returns to the Brahmas after playing in San Antonio during the 2023 season.
Adding More Support To A Strong Defense
The Brahmas defense is becoming more talented every week, and with the ten players added this week, Wade Phillips is closer to his goal of having the top defense in the UFL. The players added are two defensive linemen, three linebackers, and five defensive backs.
On the defensive line, the Brahmas added Terrance Lang and Jason Lewan. Lang spent time with the Las Angeles Chargers in 2023 and played college football at Colorado from 2017 until 2022. Lewan spent time with the Green Bay Packers in 2023 and played at Illinois State from 2018 until 2022.
Zach McCloud is a linebacker who played at the University of Miami from 2016 until 2021, and he has spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Arizona Cardinals. Garrett Nelson spent time with the Miami Dolphins in 2023 as a linebacker and played college football at Nebraska. The most experienced player in this linebacker group is Joel Iyiegbuniwe, who played four seasons with the Chicago Bears and then spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. Iyiegbuniwe has played in 65 NFL games and has 31 career tackles.
The new additions to the defensive backfield are Vernon Scott, Benjie Franklin, Gavin Helsop, Scott Nelson, and Darius Phillips. All five players come to the Brahmas with NFL experience and should be able to add support to special teams units for the Brahmas. Scott brings a Texas connection with his experience as a standout player at TCU, and Benjie Franklin has also played in the CFL with Toronto Argonauts during the CFL season in 2023.
A New Kicker Emerges
The Brahmas have also added NFL veteran kicker Matt Ammendola. Ammendola most recently kicked for the Houston Texans for five games during the 2023 season, but he has also kicked for several more NFL teams. In 2021, he kicked for the New York Jets; in 2022, he kicked for the Chiefs and Cardinals for four games. During his NFL career, Ammendola has made 24 out of 35 field goals and 29 out of 33 extra point kicks.
