Overview
The DC Defenders return home to Audi Field riding high after an impressive 18-11 victory over the defending UFL champion Birmingham Stallions in Week 1. Interim head coach Shannon Harris made an immediate impact in his debut, guiding the Defenders to a statement win behind a dominant defensive performance and clutch special teams play. The Defenders (1-0) have historically been formidable at Audi Field, boasting a 12-3 all-time home record, and will look to maintain that advantage against a Memphis Showboats team searching for their first win of the 2025 campaign.
The Showboats (0-1) are coming off a disappointing 26-12 defeat to the Michigan Panthers in their season opener. Despite being in position for a potential game-winning drive in the final minute, the Showboats fell short when quarterback Troy Williams threw a late interception that was returned for a touchdown. Memphis will need to bounce back quickly as they face a Defenders squad that dominated their previous meeting, a 36-21 DC victory in Memphis last season.
Key Players
Jordan Ta’amu (QB)
The Defenders’ signal-caller completed 17 of 37 passes for 211 yards with one touchdown and one interception in Week 1. While his completion percentage (45.9%) could use improvement, Ta’amu’s leadership and ability to make key throws in crucial moments helped secure the victory against Birmingham.
Matt McCrane (K)
The reigning UFL Special Teams Player of the Week was perfect in Week 1, converting all four field goal attempts including a 53-yarder. McCrane’s consistent performance (4-for-4) tied a franchise record and proved crucial in the win over the Stallions.
Anthony Hines III (LB)
Named the UFL Defensive Player of the Week after Week 1, Hines dominated against Birmingham with six solo tackles, two sacks, and a fumble recovery. His disruptive presence will be key against a Showboats offense that struggled with protection issues last week.
Ty Scott (WR)
Scott emerged as Ta’amu’s favorite target in Week 1, hauling in 5 receptions for 61 yards on a team-high 10 targets. His ability to create separation will be critical for the Defenders’ passing attack against Memphis.
Chris Rowland (WR)
The versatile playmaker scored the Defenders’ lone touchdown in Week 1 while contributing 40 receiving yards on 3 catches. Rowland’s big-play potential (26-yard reception) and dual-threat capability (8 rushing yards) make him a dangerous weapon in the Defenders’ offensive scheme.
Keys to the Game
Defensive Dominance
The Defenders defense recorded eight sacks against Birmingham in Week 1, showcasing their ability to generate consistent pressure. Continuing this disruptive play against a Memphis offensive line that struggled against Michigan will be critical for DC’s success.
Special Teams Advantage
With UFL Special Teams Player of the Week Matt McCrane providing reliable scoring and the Defenders’ coverage units excelling, DC has a clear edge in this phase. Converting field goal opportunities and winning the field position battle could prove decisive in what may be a low-scoring affair.
Contain Jonathan Adams
Memphis wide receiver Jonathan Adams had the best performance of any UFL player last week with six receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. The DC Defense will need to contain him in week 2. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt returns to action as play caller could have a big impact on their offense.
