As CFL teams continue to cut their rosters down, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers released Two players with American Spring Football ties. Eric Barriere former Quarterback for the Michigan Panthers and New Jersey Generals, along with Anthony Witherstone who spent training camp with the St. Louis Battlehawks both were released after the Blue Bombers first preseason game.
Barriere struggled in the Blue Bombers preseason game throwing Two interception coupled with several inaccurate passes. The former Eastern Washington QB spent Two seasons in the USFL with the Michigan Panthers and New Jersey Generals. Barriere after a dynamic college career where he earned the Walter Payton Award (FCS Heisman), appeared in Two games for Michigan in 2022 throwing for 118 Yards and 1 TD, while not appearing in any games in 2023.
Witherstone was a UDFA for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023, coming out of FCS Merrimack College. The Defensive Back was drafted by the Battlehawks in the 2023 XFL Rookie Draft, spending time with St. Louis during Training Camp. Witherstone was released prior to the UFL season before signing with Winnipeg shortly after.
With injuries mounting for all UFL teams, it wouldn’t be surprising to see both Witherstone or Barriere providing some extra reinforcement for teams during Week 10 or their playoff push. With CFL teams continuing to trim down their rosters expect more Spring Football alums to be found on the waiver wire in the next several weeks.
