The well documented journey of the “Spring King” will have to delay its swan song for another year. Per James Larsen of PFN Perez will be returning to the United Football League for his 8th professional spring football season (9th overall).
Perez has been a mainstay in all leagues of alternative football since dating back to 2019. He’s played in the AAF, XFL, TSL, USFL, XFL (3.0), and the UFL since 2024. Perez is now going into his 4th season with the Renegades a franchise he’s called home since 2023, leading them to an XFL championship. Perez has also had NFL stints with the Rams (2018/2022), Eagles (2019), Lions (2019), and Chargers (2024) as well.
Perez could be considered a bit like Bull Durham from a statistical standpoint. He currently sits 9,968 passing yards in spring football to go along with 60 passing touchdowns, both of which are within striking distance of Bobby Hebert (11137 passing yards) and Jim Kelly (83 passing touchdowns) both of which can be viewed as high water marks in spring football passing categories.

While many may be excited for the return of the “king”, some may feel that it’s time for Perez to move on. With Quarterbacks like Lindsey Scott, and Holton Ahlers both retiring in what many consider due to a lack of opportunity the veteran Perez now will have to hold off the prominent collegiate quarterback Luke Lehnen.
Perez will lead the rebranded Renegades who are going back to their Dallas roots. The Renegades went 5-5 last season with Perez starting all 10 games. Perez has totaled a 27-24 a starting quarterback in a career that includes a 2023 championship ring, a 2023 XFL championship game MVP honor, and 2025 UFL week 10 player of the week. Perez has also been the league leader in several statistical categories such as completion percentage (2022 USFL/2025 UFL), passer rating (2022 USFL/2024 UFL), passing yards (2024/2025 UFL), and passing touchdowns (2024 UFL). The 2026 UFL season is set to begin on March 27th for its 3rd season since the merger.

With Repole talking down players staying too long in the UFL (not sure that is hard and fast rule), Perez seems to be getting in just when he heard that. SMART move.
Glad he’s back but will have to earn it, I expect he will.
