UFL Championship: Can the Brahmas Defeat the Stallions in Rematch? by Aaron Sauter

San Antonio Brahmas

The San Antonio Brahmas defeated the St. Louis Battlehawks on the road to win the XFL Division Championship by a score of 25 to 15. They held quarterback A.J. McCarron to 179 passing yards which was the second week in a row they held him to under 200 passing yards. Quarterback Chase Garbers completed 15 of his 21 passes for the Brahmas for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception.

San Antonio had 3 receivers surpassing 50 yards last week. Justin Smith caught 4 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown, Jontre Kirklin caught 5 passes for 61 yards, and Marquez Stevenson caught 5 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Last week was a strong day on the ground with Anthony McFarland rushing 11 times for 115 yards (10.5 yards per carry) and John Lovett rushing 18 times for 83 yards (4.6 yards per carry).

On defense, safety Scott Nelson led the team in tackles in the XFL Championship with 7 and also had a pass breakup. Wyatt Ray and Caeveon Patton both had 3 quarterback pressures including 1 sack. Defensive end Delontae Scott had 4 pressures per Pro Football Focus. Defensive tackle Prince Emili had 2 sacks. The Brahmas defense pressured A.J. McCarron on 34.3% of his dropbacks last week.

Birmingham Stallions

The Birmingham Stallions defeated the Michigan Panthers 31 to 18 in the USFL Division Championship. It was a game in which Michigan had the upper hand with an 18-3 lead late in the 2nd quarter. Birmingham scored with just under 4 minutes left in the first half and went on to score 28 unanswered points to punch their ticket to the UFL Championship.

Birmingham made a quarterback change by putting in Matt Corral in place of Adrian Martinez for the last 20 minutes of the game. Adrian Martinez completed 10 of his 19 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown with 1 interception. Matt Corral completed 9 of his 11 passes for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception. Despite Corral having a much more efficient day than Martinez had, Birmingham will go with Martinez as the starter for the Championship game.

Running back C.J. Marable rushed 8 times for 77 yards averaging 9.6 yards per carry in the USFL Division Championship.

The Birmingham pass rush continued to be a force as Michigan’s quarterback Danny Etling was pressured on 40% of his dropbacks per Pro Football Focus. Dondrea Tillman had 5 pressures and 2 sacks. Daniel Isom, Jonathan Garvin, and DeMarquis Gates also had a sack last week.

Writer’s Pick: 57% Birmingham
