In Week 2 of UFL action, the Houston Roughnecks rolled with Reid SInnett under center after starter Jarrett Guarantano went down with a rib injury. James Larsen has reported that he’ll be out for at least a month, accounting for a good chunk of the remaining 2024 season. Sinnett had a good showing in the 18-23 loss to DC, passing 19 for 30 with 221 yards and a touchdown in relief.
While he wasn’t able to outduel Jordan Ta’amu, it was a promising showing from the veteran quarterback. WIth Guarantano headed to IR for the foreseeable future, Sinnett will hold down the starting job, with QB3 Nolan Henderson backing him up.
This QB2 spot might not be guaranteed however, as Curtis Johnson has brought back Houston Gamblers QB Kenji Bahar, and moved him to the inactive list for the time being. Bahar took snaps in Spring 2022 and 2023, totalling 2,253 yards, 10 TD’s and 11 Picks. Having spent the past season in Curtis Johnson’s system he could have an inside track to the backup job behind Reid Sinnett moving forward.
Bahar was at Monmouth in the FCS from 2015-2019 and tossed for 9.642 yards, 70 TD’s and 34 picks while completing 61.9% of his passes. His progression over that time is palpable, and he went from a 58.4% completion to 64.5 in his senior year, during which he threw for 3,684 yards and 30 TD’s and made Big South Offensive Player of the Year.
He caught on with the Baltimore Ravens as a UDFA and also had a stint with the Toronto Argonauts before making his way to Houston. Houston’s offense showed progression this week and they were able to get a run game going, and will look to continue that growth as OPOY running back Mark Thompson works his way back from a knee sprain, per @AceUFM.
