Next week, the San Antonio Brahmas coaching staff reports to training camp, which means we are getting very close to the official start of training camp for the 2025 UFL season. Earlier this week, the Brahmas training camp roster was in flux, with inside linebacker Robert Barnes retiring and Safety Christian Young added to the Brahmas roster. Despite the addition of Young, the Brahmas still have a few roster spots open for training camp, which allows the Brahmas to take a shot on a few players that could be a big hit or a big miss.
With that in mind, the Brahmas have signed former NFL Edge rusher Lonnie Phelps, according to a tweet from UFL Insider James Larsen.
Adding Phelps to the Brahmas roster could be a huge success for San Antonio, and it allows the young edge rusher to overcome his past mistakes. During Phelps’s college career, the native of Cincinnati, Ohio, made an impact for the Kansas Jayhawks and the Miami of Ohio Redhawks. That success earned Phelps an opportunity to get signed by the Cleveland Browns and eventually a spot on the Brown’s practice roster; unfortunately for Phelps, a series of poor decisions, including drunk driving in Key West and resisting police officers’ demands after an accident cut Phelps NFL career off after one season.
The 6’2″, 247-pound edge rusher made his first mark while playing at the Miami University of Ohio from 2019 until 2021. During his time with the Redhawks, Phelps played in 26 games and recorded 32 solo tackles, 16 assists, and 13 quarterback sacks. Phelps then transferred to the University of Kansas for the 2022 season. He played in 13 games for the Jayhawks and added 46 solo tackles, 12 assists, and seven quarterback sacks to his stats for his college football career.
Coming into the 2025 UFL season, the Brahmas already boast one of the top defensive units in the UFL. An elite edge rusher would be a game-changer in the UFL and could be a major step forward for a team trying to reach the same level of success as the kings of spring football in Birmingham. When training camp starts, it will be another opportunity for Phelps to show that he has what it takes to make an impact in professional football.
