After successfully upsetting the DC Defenders in Week 1 to win their home opener, the Brahmas need reinforcements to their linebacking unit. Earlier this week, the Brahmas held inside linebacker Nate Wieland out of practice due to an injury to his right tricep. Unfortunately, his injury is more significant than missing practice for Wieland, and he has moved to the Brahmas injured reserve list. The Brahmas expect Wieland to be out for the rest of the season.
Since training camp, Wieland has established himself as a solid contributor to the Brahmas defense. More importantly, he has been an exceptional player on special teams. Losing Wieland will create a gap in the Brahmas linebacking core and also require adjustments in how the Brahmas use their personnel on special teams.
In response to Wieland’s injury, the Brahmas have re-signed linebacker Kelechi Anyalebechi.
Anyalebechi had a successful training camp for the Brahmas but was a casualty when they made their second rounds of cuts. For Anyalebechi, rejoining the Brahmas allows the former Incarnate Word Cardinal to prove that he has what it takes to be a playmaker in the UFL.
In Week 1 of the UFL, the Brahmas defense showed that they may be one of the best defensive units in the league. While the Brahmas have lost Wieland, Anyalebechi is an excellent fit to step into Wieland’s role and make a seamless transition. As the Brahmas prepare to face the Memphis Showboats on Saturday at noon EST, the Brahmas defense only has a few days to adjust and integrate Anyalebechi into their defensive game plan.
