The San Antonio Brahmas started the 2025 UFL season with an uninspiring effort during their 33-9 loss to the Arlington Renegades at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The leading cause of the Brahmas’ struggles against the Renegades was seeing the Brahmas dominated by the Renegades’ offensive and defensive lines. Another obvious issue was many dropped passes by the Brahma’s receivers and somewhat reckless play by the Brahma’s new quarterback, Kellen Mond.
After the game, the UFL sent out a press release saying that the Brahmas made a move at quarterback. No, they did not release Kellen Mond, but they did release select Mike Hohensee Jr. to fill in an apparent now open inactive roster spot once filled by third-string quarterback Jarrett Guarantano.
Under the current UFL roster rules, UFL teams can have three quarterbacks during the season. For the Brahmas, those quarterbacks are Kellen Mond and Kevin Hogan, and the third is Jarrett Guarantano. On game day, the Brahmas make one quarterback inactive, and they serve as an emergency quarterback in case the 1st and 2nd string quarterbacks cannot finish the game. At the same time, there was no announcement that Guarantano chose to leave the team or that the Brahmas released Guarantano, naming Mike Hohensee Jr. as the new inactive quarterback indicates that Guarantano is no longer on the roster.
While Kellen Mond’s performance as the starting quarterback against the Renegades was not impressive, the Brahmas will continue to have Mond leading the offense, for now at least. During the game, Mond completed 17 out of 31 passes for 159 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, giving Mond a quarterback rating of 69.2. The Brahmas need to find a spark on offense heading into their first matchup with the Saint Louis Battlehawks next week.
Mike Hohensee Jr. comes to the Brahmas after having a successful collegiate career at NCAA Division II Northwest Missouri State University from 2018 until 2023. While playing for the Bearcats, Hohensee completed 489 out of 719 passes for 6,503 yards, resulting in 63 touchdowns and only 29 interceptions. Hohensee also added 632 rushing yards while running the ball 207 times, but he did score 15 rushing touchdowns. The young quarterback’s efforts at Northwest Missouri resulted in an invitation to the 2024 Dallas Cowboys Rookie Mini-Camp.
Joining the Brahmas roster gives Hohensee another opportunity to jump-start his professional football career. During the next few weeks, it will be essential to monitor this situation and see if Hohensee can significantly contribute to the Brahmas offense. There is always a chance that Hohensee is filling a roster spot for the Brahmas out of necessity, similar to Tom Flacco’s role in 2024 before being replaced by Kevin Hogan mid-season.
