The 2025 San Antonio Brahmas and head coach Wade Phillips are one step closer to making another run toward winning a UFL championship. The San Antonio coaching staff have finished their training camp evaluations after scrimmaging the Houston Roughnecks, and they have decided on which players are cut from the Brahmas training camp roster, bringing the Brahmas to a 50-man roster. For UFL coaches, making training camp cuts is a critical step to building a championship team; if they keep the wrong players, they can see their season derailed, but it can hamper championship efforts if a team cuts the valuable players.
Wade Phillips believes in leaning on his assistant coaches, who work directly with the players to decide who gets cut from the roster. As the head coach, Phillips holds the final vote over which players ultimately stay on the roster and which ones get removed, but each coach gets the opportunity to have ownership over their position group. One player whose fate remains in limbo will be wide receiver Ra’Shaun Henry, who the Brahmas added to the Injured Reserve List, according to a UFL press release.
The list of players who have been cut from the Brahmas training camp roster was announced on the X account of UFL Insider James Larsen.
San Antonio Brahmas Roster Cuts on Offense
The San Antonio Brahmas have many offensive playmakers returning for the 2025 UFL season, except being at the quarterback position. So, for players to come in and earn a roster spot on and become a part of offensive coordinator AJ Smith’s offense, they would need to go in and be head and shoulders above some of the best offensive players in the UFL. Not surprisingly, several of the players cut were wide receivers, where the Brahmas are a rich team, and along the offensive line, which appeared to be a point of emphasis for the Brahmas coming into the 2025 season.
Two wide receivers, late training camp arrival Jaelen Gill and Ty Frygogle, were cut from the Brahmas roster. On the offensive line, Justin Shaffer and Tyran Hunt were both released. The only surprising offensive player removed from the roster is center Alex Pihlstrom due to his experience with the Brahmas offense.
San Antonio Brahmas Roster Cuts on Defense
It is no surprise that the San Antonio Brahmas’ strength will once again be their defense due to Wade Phillips’s background on the defensive side of the ball in the NFL. While the Brahmas have arguably the best group of linebackers in the UFL, they did come into training camp with some room for improvement along their defensive line and defensive backfield. The defensive players cut by the Brahmas reflect the intensity of the competition in training camp along the defensive line and the Brahmas secondary.
The Brahmas have elected to remove four defensive linemen from their roster, including defensive tackles Jaylen Twyman and Marquan McCall and defensive ends Jalen Harris and John Morgan. Edge player Zach McCloud has also been cut from the Brahmas front seven. In the secondary, the Brahmas have cut cornerback Kalon Barnes, defensive back Derrick Langford, and safety Christian Young.
