Can the San Antonio Brahmas 2025 season get any worse? The 2025 UFL season for the San Antonio Brahmas is a complete disaster. The Brahmas are currently 0-3, former Offensive Coordinator AJ Smith quit mid-week in Week 3, and now head coach Wade Phillips has taken a leave of absence from the team due to illness. The only bright side of the Wade Phillips news is that it explains why he has not been on the sideline for the Brahmas during their first three games.

The chaos within the Brahmas coaching staff leaves interim head coach Payton Pardee holding the bag. When Phillips left the sideline last week against the Michigan Panthers, Pardee served as the head coach for the remaining portion of the game last week. In the previous two weeks, Pardee has gone from being the wide receiver coach and special teams coordinator to being the offensive coordinator. Now, he is the head coach and offensive coordinator. To assist Pardee in this transitional environment, the Brahmas have hired Jack Welch as the Tight Ends/Wide Receivers Coach and an assistant Special Teams coordinator.

Welch comes to the Brahmas after he was recently added to the San Antonio Caballeros’ coaching staff as the assistant head coach. Welch also has a previous connection to Pardee; both coaches spent time coaching at West Texas A&M-Commerce. While at West Texas A&M-Commerce, Welch served as the Special Teams Coordinator and the Chief of Staff from 2019 until 2024.

Brahmas Sign Running Back Aidan Robbins

In addition to numerous coaching changes for the Brahmas, the team continues to make roster moves in an effort to improve the team’s performance on the field. Recently, the Brahmas added depth at running back by signing Aidan Robbins according to a recent UFL press release and wide receiver Racey McMath was moved to the injured reserve list.

Robbins joins a Brahmas running backs room loaded with talent, including John Lovett, Anthony McFarland, and Jashaun Corbin. Adding a fourth running back is a sign that Pardee will be working to emphasize the running game in the Brahmas offensive game plan, which would help quarterback Kellen Mond and a defense that is struggling to get off the field. Robbins comes to the UFL after spending the 2024 NFL season with the Cleveland Browns.

The 6’3″, 240-pound Robbins played college football at the University of Louisville, UNLV, and BYU. Robbins played in eight games for the Louisville Cardinals from 2019 until 2021, and he ran the ball seven times for 51 yards with one touchdown. In 2022, Robbins played at UNLV, where he played in 11 games for the Rebels, and he ran the ball 209 times for 1,011 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, along with 23 receptions for 125 yards and one receiving touchdown. Robbins finished his college career at BYU in 2023, and he ran the ball 101 times for 485 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars.

Brahmas Cut Edge Rashod Berry and Sign Edge Nelson Ceaser

During the first three games this season, the San Antonio Brahmas defense has been unable to re-create their exceptional efforts from 2024 about pressuring opposing quarterbacks. The cause of that lack of pass rush quality is directly related to many personnel changes at the Edge Rusher position in the 3-4 defense. One of the Edge Rushers that have failed to produce is Rashod Berry, who has made one tackle in the first two games he played this season.

With Berry’s overall lack of production, it is unsurprising that the Brahmas cut Berry from the roster. Releasing Berry created a need in the Edge Rusher position, and UFL Insider James Larsen reported today that the Brahmas have signed Nelson Ceaser.

Ceaser joins the Brahmas roster after spending the 2024 NFL season with the Seattle Seahawks. The 6’3″, 264-pound Ceaser played college football at the University of Houston from 2019 until 2023. While playing for the Cougars, Ceaser played in 42 games and recorded 60 solo tackles, 43 assists, 18.5 quarterback sacks, forced two fumbles, and recovered one fumble that he returned for a defensive touchdown.
