The Houston Roughnecks used a pivotal defensive score to secure a narrow 21-20 victory over the Memphis Showboats Saturday at TDECU Stadium. A third-quarter fumble recovery touchdown by T.J. Franklin following Armani Marsh’s sack of Memphis quarterback Dresser Winn proved to be the difference-maker in a game where the Showboats outgained Houston 287-209 in total yards but couldn’t convert that advantage into a win.

The Houston Roughnecks improved to 3-3 on the season, moving into second place in the USFL Conference standings behind the Michigan Panthers (3-2). Memphis, meanwhile, fell to 1-5, remaining at the bottom of the USFL Conference standings after suffering their second one-point loss to Houston this season. Their previous matchup in Week 3 ended in an 18-17 Houston victory.

This hard-fought contest featured multiple lead changes and came down to Houston’s ability to capitalize on Memphis turnovers. The game-deciding play came when Marsh sacked Winn, forcing a fumble that Franklin returned for a touchdown, giving the Roughnecks a 21-14 lead they would not relinquish despite a late Showboats rally.

Can the Houston Roughnecks build on this momentum to make a playoff push in the second half of the season? Will the Memphis Showboats be able to turn their fortunes around when they host the St. Louis Battlehawks (4-2) next Sunday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium? What are your thoughts on this game?
