Explaining Sports Betting Terms

Sports betting is a time-honored tradition that goes back to the ancient world. People have been betting on events from horse racing to gladiatorial combat since the days of the Pharaohs. But as with most traditions, the digital age has led to a complete shift in what we can expect to see. Sports betting has obviously been affected by the era of online entertainment. This has led to some pretty big changes in the way that most people choose to wager. Which means that some newbies might come to novibet.ie confused. That is why we are here. In this article, we will explain some of the basic sports betting terms that every sports gambler needs to know.

Moneyline

Moneyline is another word for the most straightforward bet that you could make when betting on the internet. Another term for it might be “match bet” or “to win wager.” In essence, this is a bet that requires you to place cash on whichever side you think is going to win a single game in whatever sport you’ve elected to bet on. Moneyline bets are simple and easy to navigate. But they can get a bit predictable at times. That is why some sportsbooks have come up with point spreads to make betting more interesting.

Point Spread

A point spread is a type of handicap wager that sees the bookie distribute points to each of the two teams/athletes. The favorite is attributed negative points, while the underdog gets positive points. When wagering on a point spread, you should know that even if the favorite wins, the bet will not pay out unless they’ve made up for it in points. It is an elevated version of the classic game, but it is still quite fun for sports gamblers who are a bit more experienced.

Favorite/Underdog

We brought up the terms favorite and underdog, but we figure they might need explaining too. You’ve certainly heard the term underdog used before. It has become common parlance for most English speakers. The phrase refers to a person or team that is fighting against the odds. In other words, the underdog is the side that is less likely to win whatever game you are betting on. By that logic, the favorite would be the opposite. They are the side that is far more likely to win the match. An underdog that manages to beat the odds and win is often called “the dark horse.”

In-Play Betting

In-play betting is a style of betting that allows you to place wagers on a game while it is actively going on. Live betting has always been a pretty popular aspect of sports gambling. But online bookmakers have elevated it to the nth degree. Many are now incorporating livestreaming to help players watch the game in real time, and place bets on the sportsbook while it is taking place. It is just another way that sportsbooks value convenience above everything else. In-play betting has quickly become one of the most popular ways to wager.
