Houston Coach Kevin Sumlin Reflects on Season of Near-Misses After Rookie QB Thrust Into Action

Kevin Sumlin didn't mince words about the 10-point swing that cost Houston another winnable game. The Gamblers coach watched his team fall to St. Louis 21-15, marking yet another heartbreaking finish in a season full of them.

The loss came with rookie quarterback John Rhys Plumlee making his first extended appearance after just two weeks with the team, forced into action when starter Hunter Dekkers went down with an injury.

Rookie QB Gets Baptism by Fire

Plumlee's debut couldn't have come at a tougher time. Facing one of the league's top defenses, the young quarterback got a harsh introduction to UFL football as St. Louis defensive coordinator Corey Patterson dialed up the pressure.

"Corey knows that, right? That's why he just brought the house a bunch of times, zero blitz, and forced him into doing some things," Sumlin explained. "At the end of the day, they're just gonna be like, hey, new guy, here it comes. What you gonna do?"

The original plan called for Plumlee to enter in the third series, but Dekkers' injury changed everything. With a guard also going down, Houston's offensive line couldn't handle the constant pressure.

The Decisive 10-Point Swing

Sumlin zeroed in on the sequence that sealed Houston's fate - a late first-half interception that shifted momentum completely.

"The series of events right before the half are magnified with the pick that he throws. And because of the pressure and them scoring before the half, right? That's a 10-point swing because you already got a field goal. But then they throw a fade down there and so they get 10."

It's become a familiar pattern for the Gamblers this season. Sumlin pointed out his team has lost games in similar fashion "at least 4 times this year."

"No one in this league is good enough to give up or give away, particularly at this point... no one's good enough to throw away 10 points," he said.

Season of Heartbreak

The loss epitomized Houston's entire campaign - competitive until the end but unable to close out games. Every contest except one has come down to the final play, whether home or away.

"The game we won, we won on the final play too," Sumlin noted. "We kicked the field goal to beat Birmingham on the last play of the game."

Despite the frustration, Sumlin took pride in his team's continued effort. He mentioned compliments from visiting coaches, including the University of Houston head coach, about how hard his players keep fighting.

"The big compliment that I got this week from guys was, man, those guys are still playing hard. There's no question about that. It's not like this team has quit, and I think that's evident."

Education and Football's Life Lessons

In a touching moment with kid reporter Kush Culver, Sumlin reflected on how education shaped his coaching philosophy. With parents who were both educators, school was never optional.

"In a locker room, to achieve a goal, particularly in a game like football, which I would argue is the ultimate team sport, you need 11 people," Sumlin explained. "You can't see color. You can't see race. You can't see money. You have to see ability and trust no matter what, where you're from."

He spoke passionately about watching football change families, helping players become the first in their extended families to graduate college.

"Without this game, they couldn't afford to play, they couldn't afford to go to college. And they couldn't afford to do things and change their family's lives and change lives forever," he said.

Looking Ahead

With Houston's season winding down, Sumlin emphasized the dual purpose of these final games - competing to win while showcasing players for the next level. The message to his team remains unchanged despite the disappointment.

The quarterback situation will need evaluation heading into the final week, but one thing won't change - this Houston team will keep fighting until the end.
