The Los Angeles Kings have taken the first formal step toward challenging the name of the reigning UFL champion.
The NHL club filed a request on August 26 to extend its time to oppose the LOUISVILLE KINGS trademark, according to Trademark Trial and Appeal Board records. The board granted it the same day. The extension runs through November 25, 2026.
XFL Properties LLC, the entity that files trademarks for the UFL, owns the application. It carries serial number 99433452.
What the Kings actually filed
An extension of time to oppose is not an opposition. It is a hold.
When the Patent and Trademark Office publishes a trademark application, anyone who believes the mark would damage them gets 30 days to object. The Louisville Kings application published July 28. That window was set to close August 27. The Los Angeles Kings filed one day before it did.
The record lists The Los Angeles Kings Hockey Club, L.P. as the potential opposer, with correspondence going to Jia Wang at NHL Enterprises, L.P. in New York. XFL Properties is represented by Eric Lamb of FBT Gibbons LLP in Indianapolis.
What the club filed is a first 90-day request, the opening step in the process. Requests of that length are granted on request and do not require the filer to give a reason. The board logged the request and the grant as separate entries on the same date.
The hockey club now has until November 25 to file an opposition, ask for more time, or let the application move ahead.
Where the two marks overlap
The application covers more than football. USPTO records list clothing — tops, bottoms, headwear, outerwear, gloves, neckties, socks, footwear, swimwear, sleepwear and loungewear — alongside television and radio broadcasting services.
Class 25 is the apparel class. It is the same class NHL clubs use to protect merchandise. The Los Angeles Kings have played in the NHL since 1967 and sell apparel under the Kings name across the United States.
The team that carries the name
The UFL announced the Louisville Kings on October 7, 2025, alongside the Columbus Aviators and Orlando Storm, in the same release that moved the league to eight teams for 2026. XFL Properties filed the trademark the next day.
Louisville was picked from a pool of more than 30 interested cities, the league said at the time.
Mike Repole explained the name at the team's introductory press conference, per WDRB.
"You've got King Louis, the sport of kings, and now the Louisville Kings. That's not a coincidence — that's fate."
The team plays at Lynn Family Stadium and is coached by Chris Redman. It won the 2026 United Bowl in its first season, beating the DC Defenders 27-20 on June 13 at Audi Field. Running back Ian Wheeler took MVP honors after 10 carries for 81 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that put Louisville in front.
Orlando filed the same day and drew nothing
XFL Properties filed the ORLANDO STORM application on October 8, 2025, the same day as Louisville. It published July 28, the same day. Its opposition window closed August 27 with no opposition and no extension on file.
Two applications, filed together and published together. One drew a challenge.
The Wrangler case is the closest comparison
USFL Enterprises went through a version of this last year. Wrangler Apparel Corp. filed Opposition 91299999 in June 2025 against AUSTIN WRANGLERS and two applications for the standalone word WRANGLERS.
Board records show a withdrawal of application entered March 5, 2026, and the opposition dismissed with prejudice on March 23. Both standalone WRANGLERS applications now show "abandoned after inter-partes decision." AUSTIN WRANGLERS received its Notice of Allowance on May 5, 2026.
The city-and-nickname mark came through. The nickname-only marks did not. LOUISVILLE KINGS is a city-and-nickname mark.
What happens next
November 25 is the date on the docket. Extensions of this kind often end in a settlement or simply expire, and the record shows no opposition has been filed.
Neither XFL Properties nor the Los Angeles Kings has issued a public statement about the filing.
