While the UFL saw 75 players earn NFL contracts this signing cycle, one of the mainstays over the past two seasons has been released. 2024 UFL MVP and Champion Adrian Martinez was among the first players for San Francisco to be released as NFL begin trimming their roster to 53 players, along with practice squad allocations.
Martinez is going into his third NFL season (fourth total) since earning the MVP in 2024. He's spent time with both the Jets and 49ers, using this season to battle with 2025 draft pick Kurtis Rourke for a QB3 position. Martinez appeared in all three preseason games this season, throwing for over 340 yards and a touchdown while adding another touchdown on the ground.
A versatile option and dynamic athlete, Martinez could be a practice squad candidate for multiple NFL teams, or find himself a new home, with a Kyle Shanahan disciple if needed. In past years the 49ers have utilized four QBs on their roster with three active and one a member of the practice squad.
Roster cuts will continue as teams prepare for the 2026 season. Prior to his release Martinez was one of 10 members still on a NFL roster from the 2024 UFL to NFL signing class.
