UFL Retirement Roundup: Several Players end careers, as 2026 season comes to a close

The UFL saw a fair amount of transition this season, whether it was forced or players opted on their own terms. Since the conclusion of training camp several players have opted to end their careers whether it be for injuries or other reasons. While remnants of past spring football leagues have continued to "ride off into the sunset" over the past several weeks, former members of the UFL have also "called it" a career.

Recent Retirements:

Aaron Shampklin Running Back 2023 Houston Gamblers:

Shampkin was a late season signing by Houston during the 2023 USFL season. While playing sparingly he managed to earn a contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, followed by a futures deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2024, he would make his NFL debut with Pittsburgh spending the whole season with the team. He'd appear in training camp with the Dolphins in 2025, being released during final cuts, joining the CFL in 2026. On April 7th, Shampklin was placed on the Calgary Stampeders retired list.

Caleb Johnson Linebacker 2025 Arlington Renegades

Johnson was a reserve Linebacker for the Renegades in 2025, after two years on and off NFL practice squads. He'd sign with the Montreal Alouettes after the 2025 UFL season appearing in one game for the CFL during their 2025 season. Johnson was placed on the Alouettes retired list on March 31st.

Brady Breeze Safety 2025 Arlington Renegades

Breeze had multiple stints on NFL active rosters and practice squads from 2021 to 2024, before an injury ended his 2024 season with the Browns. He'd eventually sign with the Arlington Renegades before being released during final cuts. Breeze would sign with the Calgary Stampeders during the 2025 CFL season, appearing in four games including one start. He was placed on the Stampeders retired list on April 30th.

Delonte Hood Defensive Back Arlington Renegades

Hood burst onto the UFL scene in 2024, as an unknown from the NAIA school Peru State. He earned an NFL opportunity with the Cardinals in 2024 only to be released at the conclusion of training camp. After spending some time with the Toronto Argonauts in 24', he'd return to the UFL with the Renegades getting released during final cuts. Hood returned to Toronto in 2025 starting five games with the team, however, took to social media to announce his retirement this past week.

Nash Jensen Offensive Lineman Louisville Kings

Jensen was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2023 USFL college draft, only to find himself signing a UDFA deal with the Carolina Panthers. He'd start five games his rookie season before being released during final cuts in 2024. Jensen would spend 2025 with the Memphis Showboats, and then joined the Louisville Kings for the first part of the 2026 season. Jensen would be released on April 19th, and took to social media to announce his retirement last week.

Eight spring football players (alumni) have announced their retirement since the conclusion of training camp this season. Recently notable players like Taylor Heinicke, and P.J. Walker both of which have had plenty of success at the NFL level also announced their retirement as well. During the 2025 cycle 52 players announced their retirement, with 2024 seeing 40 players offically announce their retirement.
