Heading into Week 7 of the 2026 UFL season, the Orlando Storm and Houston Gamblers both have a playoff opportunity. However, each is trending in a different direction, affecting their approach. The Storm, hit by turnovers and consecutive losses, view this game as a chance to rebound. Meanwhile, the Gamblers, needing to win out to keep playoff hopes alive, will likely play aggressively. The Orlando Storm are coming into Houston after taking a tough 20-17 loss to the Birmingham Stallions. During that loss, the Storm struggled to maintain the offensive consistency that helped them jump out to a 4-0 start to the 2026 season. If the Storm and quarterback Jack Plummer can improve their red zone efficiency from the last two weeks and limit turnovers, they should have a good chance to pick up their 5th win of the season against a Gamblers team that has been hit hard by injuries. In contrast, the Houston Gamblers are spiraling after injuries to several quarterbacks, making it difficult for the offense to find stability. Orlando Storm Key to Victory #1: Protect the Ball on Offense
The Achilles' heel of the Orlando Storm over the last two weeks is their recent habit of putting the ball on the ground on offense and not getting the ball into the end zone when they reach the red zone. A result of the Storm's fumbling issues is a greater reliance on being a pass-heavy offense, which allows defenses to load up against Storm quarterback Jack Plummer and attack the Orlando passing game. Orlando needs to protect the ball, especially in the run game, so the team can be more successful on first and second down, making 3rd downs more manageable for Plummer. While Jack Plummer has done a nice job of managing the Orlando offense, he is not playing his best football when he needs to make high-risk throws, especially in the red zone. An easy solution is to incorporate the running game so the Storm can use Boot and Waggle schemes in the red zone. If the Storm can put Plummer into position to get on the run, it will allow his receivers to get separation as the offense gets closer to the red zone.
Orlando Storm Key to Victory #2: Neutralize Houston's Defensive Playmakers
The Storm's offense will need to come in ready to play patient football on offense to limit mistakes against a tough Gamblers defense. It is critical that the Storm have a plan to keep linebacker Anthony Hines III out of their offensive backfield, so their running game and Jashaun Corbin can manage the game. In the backend, the Gamblers' secondary will work to bait Jack Plummer into hesitating and turning the ball over. The Storm offensive line has struggled with pass protection because Orlando's run game has been slow to get going. If Orlando cannot sustain their run game, they risk inconsistent offensive performances. That balance prevents Plummer from making risky throws that lead to turnovers. Those turnovers are what Houston hopes to create to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
Orlando Storm Key to Victory #3: Hit Home with Defensive Pressure
In the first six games of 2026, the Orlando Storm defense has become one of the UFL's top units. Their defensive front seven has played consistently and pressured quarterbacks. Pressuring the Gamblers' quarterback will be key this week given their instability at that position. However, pressuring the Gamblers' quarterback is only part of what the Storm's defense must focus on. If Orlando cannot turn its pass rush into sacks, Houston will have a chance to pull off an upset. Furthermore, the Storm need to create sacks with a four-man rush; using more would open more windows for Gamblers' quarterbacks to find holes in the Storm secondary. Finally, the Storm must be ready to shut down the Gamblers' run game to force Houston's offense into a one-dimensional attack.
Orlando Storm Key to Victory #4: Maintain Late-Game Discipline
Throughout the 2026 season, the Orlando Storm have consistently played in one-score games. Early in the season, the Storm did a good job of maintaining discipline to finish those games. However, the Storm have appeared rattled since facing the Saint Louis Battlehawks, when they fell behind early due to turnovers. That rattled mindset carried over to their next game against the Birmingham Stallions, which led to more mistakes and missed opportunities in the 4th quarter. If the Storm want to become a legitimate championship contender this season, they must stop taking unnecessary gambles and return to playing sound football. That will require the Storm, from their coaching staff to their players, to focus on playing clean, fundamentally sound football. To win this game and get back on track, set themselves up to earn a trip to the 2026 playoffs, Orlando must play four quarters of disciplined football, especially on offense.
