Jordan Ta'amu has not thrown a competitive pass since May 16. He left the DC Defenders' road game at Louisville in the first quarter that day and did not come back.
The first public read on where he is now came September 3, from his head coach. Shannon Harris said he has stayed in contact with Ta'amu through the offseason and has gone to some of his workouts.
"Jordan [Ta'amu], you know, he's definitely the glue stick, our leader, to our football program organization. He's been working his butt off," Harris told Ethan Berch in a UFL feature.
That is the update. No timetable, no clearance news, no target date from the team.
What DC Has and Hasn't Said
The Defenders announced on May 18 that Ta'amu would go on injured reserve for the rest of the season. The release called it a season-ending injury and stopped there. The league did not name it either, as UFL News Hub reported at the time.
That has not changed in the three and a half months since. Neither the team nor the league has issued a follow-up on the diagnosis, a surgery date, or a rehab stage.
RotoWire lists Ta'amu on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and carries an estimated return date of March 1, 2027. That is a projection from an outside outlet, not a Defenders timeline.
Why That Date Matters
The 2026 UFL season kicked off March 27. Training camp opened in late February.
The league has not released a 2027 schedule or announced a start date. If 2027 follows the same calendar, a March 1 return would put Ta'amu back a few weeks ahead of Week 1 and inside camp.
Move the season up and that margin disappears. Move it back and he gets more room. Until the league publishes a date, the gap between his recovery and the start of football is unknown in both directions.
What Happened Behind Him
DC already worked through the depth chart once. Spencer Sanders took over in the Week 8 loss at Louisville and was the starter for the final two weeks of the regular season.
Jason Bean, who opened the year as Louisville's starter before a midseason trade to DC for Mike DiLiello, started the playoffs. He led the Defenders past top-seeded Orlando 28–22 in the semifinal, then started the United Bowl at Audi Field on June 13.
Bean separated his left shoulder in the third quarter of that game, per Fox Baltimore, and E.J. Perry finished it. Louisville won 27–20.
What DC Is Waiting to Get Back
Ta'amu was a 2026 UFL MVP finalist off eight games. He completed 109 of 177 passes for 1,515 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions, and added 198 rushing yards on 46 carries. He still finished third in the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns.
His last month of work: four touchdown passes at Birmingham in Week 5, three more against Dallas in Week 6, then 353 yards against Louisville in Week 7. He was two of four for 62 yards in Week 8 before he went out.
The year before, he was the Championship Game MVP, throwing for 390 yards with four touchdowns in DC's 58–34 win over the Michigan Panthers.
DC was 5–1 through six weeks with him. The Defenders went 0–4 the rest of the regular season and finished 5–5 as the fourth seed.
What Comes Next
No 2027 schedule. No roster announcements. No medical clearance date.
What exists is a coach saying his quarterback is working, an outside projection pointing at March, and a season that does not have a start date yet.
