The Columbus Aviators gutted out their most complete performance of the season, rallying from a 29-21 second-half deficit to defeat Birmingham and snap their losing streak in front of 9,217 fans at Historic Crew Stadium.
The breakthrough win showcased everything head coach Ted Ginn Jr. has been preaching about complementary football, with all three phases contributing to the comeback victory that kept the Aviators' slim playoff hopes alive.
Jalen Morton Puts Team on His Back
Quarterback Jalen Morton delivered a franchise-record performance with over 300 all-purpose yards, capping the comeback with a 9-yard rushing touchdown that sealed the victory. The dual-threat signal-caller was matter-of-fact when asked about the game-winning score.
"Open field. I mean, who's going to tackle me?" Morton said. "At the end of the day, if you think about it, right, if I get on the 1 or I score, we still score. It was what it was."
Morton credited the team's complementary football for getting the offense in rhythm after a rough start that included an early mishap.
D.J. Miller's Pick-Six Sparks Momentum
Defensive back D.J. Miller continued his hot streak with another interception — his third in as many games — returning this one for a touchdown that shifted momentum. The pick-six represents both a new franchise record for consecutive games with an interception and a career milestone for Miller.
"Man, just get up and score. Honestly, take it back to the crib. I was trying to really emulate this guy to my right, right here in his heyday," Miller said, referencing coach Ted Ginn Jr.
When asked about his emotions after scoring, Miller kept it simple: "Thank you, Jesus."
Coach Ted's Halftime Message
Down 29-21 at the break, Ginn Jr. delivered a straightforward message to his team that epitomized his coaching philosophy.
"At halftime I asked my team just to go out and play football. Bring your helmet and your shoulder pads and don't talk. That's what we did," Ginn Jr. explained. "It was rocky, it was ups and downs, but we believed in each other and that's all I teach every day is believe in each other, believe in yourself, play for the name on your back."
The coach emphasized how his players have been executing in practice what they showed on the field Saturday night, particularly praising Miller's consistency.
Complementary Football on Full Display
The Aviators showed the kind of three-phase football that wins games, with special teams providing crucial energy after the early offensive struggles. Morton highlighted how each unit supported the others throughout the comeback.
"That's complimentary football for you. That's all 3 phases that you saw. Us having defensive back, defense having special teams back, and offense had just, you know, it all just, everybody's having each other's back," Morton said.
Ginn Jr. dealt with personnel challenges throughout the game, noting he "had a kicker that was a punter today, had a punter that was a kicker today" while managing injury issues.
Building Momentum for Year Two
The victory improved Columbus to 3-1 at home this season and provided a blueprint for what the franchise can accomplish when everything clicks. Ginn Jr. called it "the most gratifying win of the season" and praised the effort from his players.
"This the most camaraderie football that we didn't play all year. We believed in each other. We played for each other, and that's all you're going to ask for," the coach said.
With multiple franchise records set in a single game and the kind of complementary football that translates to wins, the Aviators showed they're building something special in their inaugural season that could carry momentum into 2027.
