DC Defenders Show Championship Mettle in Comeback Win Over Birmingham

The defending UFL champions proved why they wear the crown Saturday night, responding to every Birmingham challenge with the poise of a team that knows how to win when it matters most.

When the Stallions cut DC's lead to 21-19 in a moment that could have rattled lesser teams, the Defenders did what champions do — they punched right back.

Every Game is Someone Else's 'UFL Championship'

Head coach Shannon Harris knows his team carries a target on their back every week, and he's embraced that reality.

"We know we're still defending champs, but at the same time, anytime we play anyone going forward or even at the beginning of the season, it's everyone's UFL championship," Harris said after the win. "So that's the mindset going into each game."

That mindset served the Defenders well when Birmingham made their push. Instead of tightening up, DC's offense answered the call.

"We challenged our offense when they scored right there and made it 21-19. Just go out there and put points back up," Harris explained. "And we know our defense is going to get a stop going back for us."

Offensive Balance Paying Dividends

Quarterback Jordan Ta'amu has found his rhythm again, and he credits the ground game for opening up the passing attack that torched Birmingham's secondary.

"Just our run game, you know, our O-line. Shout out to them. They've done a great job week in and week out controlling that line of scrimmage," Ta'amu said. "Coach said it, if we get the run game early, that pass game is going to open up. And that's what it did today."

The balance has been crucial for a Defenders offense that struggled early in the season to find consistency. Ta'amu dismissed any notion that the unit ever truly stopped clicking.

"I don't think our offense stopped clicking the beginning as they were giving us run, and we were just running the ball very well," he said. "And if they want to come down now, we throw it over their head."

Ready for Any Challenge

The Defenders prepared all week for Birmingham's quarterback situation, knowing they'd likely face DTR despite not seeing much film of him this season. Harris felt confident in his team's preparation.

"We've seen DTR play before. We know his game, even though we haven't seen him play any this year, but we still knew his game," Harris said. "We knew he was very talented, athletic. He was going to make some plays with the legs."

Still Room to Grow

Despite the victory, Harris knows his defending champions haven't reached their ceiling yet. The coach acknowledged they're still learning how to put teams away.

"We still gotta learn how to finish games the right way and keep our composure," he admitted.

But that's the mark of a championship team — winning while still finding ways to improve. The Defenders continue to show they have the mental toughness to handle the pressure that comes with being the hunted rather than the hunters.
