Birmingham Stallions head coach found plenty to like in his team's effort against the defending champion DC Defenders, particularly the instant impact of new quarterback DTR despite having just 2.5 days to prepare for his debut.
The Stallions fell to DC in a game that showcased both promise and growing pains for a team still finding its identity. But the biggest storyline was DTR's immediate command of the huddle and veteran presence that energized an offense down to five healthy receivers.
Quick Integration Shows Promise
"Really, it was technically about 2.5 days of practice. I mean, we had walkthrough first day," the coach explained when asked about DTR's rapid integration. "But I mean, you can see it. He has command of the huddle. It's all the things I talked about that were needed."
"You know, I thought him as a vet, you know, being in an NFL huddle for so many years, like, that's something you look forward to and the preparation is there. Listen, he competed his ass off. I was super proud of him."
The coach emphasized that despite the loss, DTR's performance gave him confidence about the team's trajectory. "We're going to get better and better," he said, pointing to the quarterback's ability to handle protections and communicate effectively despite the compressed timeline.
Turnovers and Bad Luck Costly
While praising his team's effort, the coach acknowledged that turnovers and unfortunate bounces changed the complexion of the game. He described a series of plays that went against Birmingham, including tipped balls that led to interceptions and a fumble on what should have been a big gain.
"We just had some bad luck on some plays. If you clean those up, it's a different ballgame," he said. The coach specifically mentioned a goal-line interception off a tipped pass and another pick that came when "ball gets tipped, tipped right to him" while John Ross was in single coverage.
Running Game Steps Up
With Anthony McFarland injured, the Stallions got solid contributions from their backup running backs. The coach was particularly impressed with Tyreon Davis-Price's performance in tough situations.
"I thought, hell, more than anything, I thought Tyreon did an unbelievable job. He had some really hard runs," he said. Both Snoop Conner and Davis-Price contributed not just in the ground game but also in pass protection, helping DTR settle into the pocket.
Red Zone Defense Struggles
One area of concern was the defense's performance in the red zone, where DC converted 4 of 5 opportunities despite Birmingham entering the game ranked third in red zone defense efficiency. The coach acknowledged he needed to review the tape before offering specific analysis of what went wrong in those crucial situations.
The penalties also frustrated the coaching staff, with the coach emphasizing the need to "stay locked in and not lose focus" when fatigue sets in during games.
Despite the loss, the quick chemistry between DTR and his new teammates suggests Birmingham's offense could be poised for significant improvement as the season progresses.
