Houston Gamblers Coach Kevin Sumlin Calls Recent Performance "Tale of Two Teams" Ahead of Thursday Night Showdown

Houston Gamblers head coach Kevin Sumlin didn't mince words when describing his team's Jekyll-and-Hyde performance over the past two weeks. Following a disciplined win that featured just four penalties, the Gamblers collapsed into penalty trouble with 13 flags in their most recent loss.

"It's really been a tale of two teams," Sumlin said during Tuesday's media availability. "As poised and disciplined as we were the week before with only 4 penalties, we end up with 13 last week."

Short Week Preparation Challenges

The Gamblers face an immediate test of their ability to bounce back, hosting the Louisville Kings on Thursday night with limited preparation time. Sumlin has leaned on NFL contacts to navigate the compressed schedule.

"I've communicated with a lot of NFL teams, because really good teams play Sunday night and Thursday night games," Sumlin explained. "We've kind of assimilated into that mode this week, just like how certain teams prepare with a lot more walkthrough, a lot more meeting time."

The coach emphasized that today was essentially the last full practice either team could manage before Thursday's kickoff, with travel plans cutting into preparation time.

Malik Fisher: A Bright Spot in Tough Times

While much needs fixing, Sumlin found plenty of praise for defensive standout Malik Fisher, who's tied for second in the league in sacks.

"He is one heck of a player. He's one of the best pass rushers in this league. He plays with a high motor, high intensity guy, great leader. I can't say enough about him, and that was why it was one of the first moves we made to try to get him."

Sumlin highlighted Fisher's dual impact as both a vocal leader and someone who leads by example, noting that "he makes the people around him better."

Louisville Kings: Hungry and Dangerous

Despite the Kings' struggles this season, Sumlin isn't taking Thursday's opponent lightly. The teams have familiarity from sharing practice facilities and holding joint scrimmages.

"They've been in every game," Sumlin said of Louisville. "Coach Red does a great job. They got a great coaching staff and they just keep plugging away. They got plenty of talent. They've just had the ball hadn't bounced their way, but they've been in every game."

The coach added a telling detail about Louisville's motivation: "They're as hungry as we are right now for a win."

Back to Fundamentals

Sumlin's plan for getting back on track mirrors what worked after a poor Week 1 performance. The focus returns to fundamentals and internal improvement rather than opponent-specific preparation.

Communication breakdowns plagued the defense in the recent loss, leading to big plays that could have been prevented. "The communication piece has got to be better this week, has to be," Sumlin stressed.

With both teams desperate for a victory and minimal time to prepare, Thursday night's matchup between two hungry clubs could come down to which team better handles the pressure of a short week.
