Louisville Kings Head Coach Chris Redman Speaks to Media About First Week of Practice

UFL Louisville Kings head coach Chris Redman spoke to the media on Thursday, expressing his excitement over the upcoming season, the recent rule changes, and how the team and coaches are responding to the first week of practice.

The coaching staff got its first look at the players on the field this week. Redman was very upbeat about the team’s first week of practice and excited for what he saw from the players.

Kings' First Practice Sessions

“Going out to the field, we had a chance to see the guys running around, sweating, competing. It’s been a great opportunity to learn about them, and they learned about us. So far it’s going well.”

Acknowledging that things got a little heated this week with a minor on-field skirmish, Redman said. “This is a group of competitors, and you wouldn’t think any less when you play professional football… but we’re learning how to do it the right way, though….Love the passion, but we just can’t take it over the top.”

For many of the more experienced players, it’s a necessary reminder of how it’s done in professional football. For others, it’s a learning experience as they hear from the coaches not to take it too far.

But the energy and desire are there for the players, and that’s what Redman wants to see from the team. “I love the energy…Every day we’re really coming together, and it’s a good group. These guys love what they do, and I think that’s the beautiful thing about this league. These guys are hungry to get back in the NFL, and... they know that this is a league that gives them that opportunity to get back in the league.”

UFL Rule Changes

Asked about the recent rule changes, Redman seemed most enthusiastic about the potential of the four-point kick. "Yeah, the 60-yard field goal is so exciting. I think it brings an element that rewards guys for having a great kicker.” He predicted that for teams who might be behind late in the game, it could lead to some incredible finishes, pointing out that with the added point potential, “You’re always in the game.”

Overall, Redman thinks the rule changes from top to bottom are great. “Mike Repole has done an incredible job of doing everything from top to bottom to make this a fan-friendly sport. And that’s important because when the fans come to the games, you know..this is something that’s going to be a little bit unique, a little different.” He continued, “They’re going to walk away, thinking, 'Man, that was an exciting afternoon, and I’m gonna come back.”

Upcoming Scrimmage and Season Opener

Next up for the Kings: a joint scrimmage on March 7th against the Columbus Aviators, before they open the season on March 27th against the Birmingham Stallions. Redman welcomes the challenge of playing the Stallions in a high-profile game in front of a national TV audience. He’s going to have his players ready to take on the three-time champions. He's also looking forward to the opportunity to showcase his hometown, the beautiful city of Louisville.
