Tyler Vaughns isn't getting ahead of himself. Despite leading the UFL in receiving yards while helping Dallas stay perfect at 3-0, the Renegades star receiver has his priorities straight.
"Right now, my mind's not really on the NFL because of the way in which we have this season," Vaughns said after practice Wednesday. "Right now it's the only opportunity that I have. NFL is not even guaranteed. So just in terms of that right there, we'll get our look here and there and some guys will, some guys won't. But this is my time to show what I can do and just have fun in terms of the league itself."
Individual Excellence Fueling Team Success
Vaughns has torched opposing defenses through three weeks, emerging as quarterback Austin Reed's favorite target in an offense that's clicked from day one. But the receiver knows his success has made him a marked man.
"I'm just knowing that you might not get exactly what you're seeing on film. Just to prepare this week, really knowing that you might get doubled or bracketed itself right there and allow other people to be open," Vaughns explained. "Basically, they just gonna use me as a decoy. That's gonna open up everybody else like Tay, Stoops, Greg Ward, McBride's gonna show up and make plays."
The chemistry between Vaughns and Reed has been crucial to Dallas's fast start. "Us just communicating, being on the same page as far as, like, little details as far as, like, routes, route depth, the certain type of ball he wants to throw depending on the coverage," Vaughns said about their partnership.
Room for Improvement Despite Perfect Record
Head coach Rick Neuheisel isn't satisfied with just wins. After Dallas survived a closer-than-expected battle with Columbus last week, the coach sees plenty of areas for growth, particularly with his quarterback's decision-making.
"He doesn't get off script because he thinks that this is a really good idea when there was something presented to him that was much easier to complete. He has a swashbuckler personality. He thinks there's no challenge too big," Neuheisel said about Reed. "But sometimes it's just more prudent to take what is given to you and move along."
Vaughns echoed his coach's assessment about missed opportunities: "We probably left a good 150 yards on the table, uh, 2 touchdowns. So that, and that right there, just pitching our offense, being that more productive."
Historic Fort Hood Game Brings Special Meaning
The Renegades will make history when they face Orlando at Fort Hood later this season, marking the first UFL game played on a military base. For Vaughns, who has family members who serve, the game carries extra significance.
"It means amazing. Like, for me, I think that it's kind of great because I have some people that I serve. So it's just something of like, uh, a giving game for them," Vaughns said. "I get to play for them like any other day, but just in that day, it's literally like a little bit more special because it's like really for them."
Neuheisel understands the weight of performing in front of military personnel who know something about teamwork and sacrifice.
"The men and women of the armed forces are without peer in terms of their selflessness, and to have a chance and provide some measure of entertainment on the base especially given the conflicts that exist in the world right now. That's, I think, a real opportunity for us to say thank you, and hopefully we'll do so with a great effort."
Compressed Schedule Creates Challenges
Dallas faces a brutal stretch with three games in 11 days, testing the depth and conditioning that will be crucial for any championship run. Linebacker Tra Fluellen acknowledged the physical toll but emphasized the team's championship mindset.
"Any time you have a team that's going 3-0, man, everybody's going to start, you know, getting that ego about themselves and stuff like that. Our coaches have done a great job just keeping us humble and keeping us true to ourselves," Fluellen said. "The main goal is to win the championship. We want to win everything. We're not settling for anything less."
With an undefeated record and individual stars like Vaughns leading the way, Dallas has positioned itself as an early championship contender. The key now is maintaining that focus through a grueling schedule while preparing for opponents who will bring their best shot every week.
