Championship experience and a long history of success in indoor football are coming to San Antonio as Billy Back takes over the Gunslingers.
The San Antonio Gunslingers have announced Billy Back as their new head coach for the 2027 season, bringing one of indoor football's most accomplished coaches to San Antonio.
Back most recently served as Offensive Coordinator for the Tulsa Oilers in 2025. Prior to joining Tulsa, he spent the 2024 season as Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator of the Tucson Sugar Skulls.
Before his time in Tucson, Back led the Frisco Fighters to the best regular-season record in the Indoor Football League in consecutive seasons. He joined Frisco in 2022 after leading the Spokane Shock to the 2021 IFL Playoffs. In his first season with the Fighters, Back guided Frisco to a 14-2 record and an appearance in the Conference Championship Game.
During his tenure in Frisco, the Fighters consistently featured one of the league's most productive offenses. Frisco also produced the IFL's top rushing attack while boasting one of the league's strongest defenses against the run.
A five-time championship-winning head coach, Back has built a lengthy track record of success throughout indoor football. He led the expansion Carolina Cobras to consecutive National Arena League championship appearances in 2018 and 2019, winning the championship during the franchise's inaugural season in 2018.
Back also led the Nashville Venom to a Professional Indoor Football League championship in 2014. His previous head coaching stops include the Texas Revolution in 2013 and 2015 and the Cincinnati Commandos from 2009 through 2012. Back guided Cincinnati to three championships, including a perfect 12-0 season in 2011, and was named Co-Coach of the Year in 2010.
Before beginning his coaching career, Back played six seasons across various indoor football leagues. He played collegiately at Miami University in Ohio and was later inducted into the Miami University Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a student-athlete.
Back now takes over in San Antonio with five championships and more than a decade of head coaching experience, as the Gunslingers begin building toward the 2027 IFL season.
