Birmingham Stallions Fall to St. Louis Despite Fourth-Quarter Fight, McCarron Calls Out Execution Issues

The Birmingham Stallions dropped their second straight game in heartbreaking fashion, falling 34-30 to the St. Louis Battlehawks after surrendering a fourth-quarter lead. Despite showing fight in the final frame, self-inflicted wounds proved too much to overcome as Birmingham fell to 1-2 on the season.

Head coach AJ McCarron didn't sugarcoat his team's performance in the loss, pointing to penalties and turnovers as the primary culprits in what should have been a winnable road game.

Penalties and Turnovers Sink Birmingham

The Stallions committed eight penalties for 77 yards, marking the second consecutive week they've lost the penalty battle. Combined with costly turnovers, those mistakes proved decisive in a game that came down to the final play.

"Two weeks in a row we've lost the penalty battle and then, I mean, it's plain and simple. Can't turn the ball over. Can't have stupid turnovers," McCarron said.

The turnovers were particularly damaging given Birmingham's ability to move the ball effectively at times. The offense showed flashes but couldn't sustain drives when it mattered most.

McCarron Critical of Quarterback Play and Line Communication

McCarron was especially critical of quarterback Matt Corral's hesitant play early in the game, calling for more confidence from his signal-caller. The offensive line's communication issues also drew sharp criticism from the coach.

"Mattie's got to play with confidence. I thought he was very hesitant early on, and my biggest thing to him is can't have bad turnovers, can't just throw the ball up. But you also got to have a mentality of, you know, forget it, on to the next play and go out and throw the ball with conviction and not just try to guide it."

The offensive line struggles were evident in the first half, with McCarron noting poor communication between the guards. "We talk about running the ball and then, I mean, we're not doing what we need," he said. "The communication I thought was bad up front in the first half."

McCarron's Return to St. Louis

The loss came in McCarron's return to St. Louis, where he previously coached for two seasons. Despite the disappointing result, the coach expressed appreciation for his time in the city.

"It's great. You know, it's two great years in this city and it was awesome to come back hear it from the other side," McCarron said. "I love my 2 years here and appreciate this city a ton."

Cain Sees Silver Lining Despite Loss

Wide receiver Deion Cain remained optimistic despite the tough loss, praising his team's resilience and ability to fight back in the second half. The veteran receiver believes the close losses are building character for the young squad.

"As a team, I'd rather have losses where they're like nail-biters and we can fix mistakes. I trust me, I never— I don't even have like no worry feeling in us that we can't bounce back from these because I see the improvement from each and every week."

Cain highlighted the team's refusal to fold when facing adversity, pointing to their second-half comeback attempt as evidence of their character. "You could just see our will to fight, man. Obviously, with us giving up a lot of turnovers, not having the game go our way early, a lot teams could really fold it. But we came back second half, showed our will that we're still trying to win."

Looking Ahead to Home Opener

With five of their next seven games at home, the Stallions have a chance to right the ship starting with their home opener against the Orlando Storm next week. Both players and coaches emphasized the importance of getting back to Protective Stadium after three straight road games.

"It feels good, man. I'm excited to be back in Birmingham to play in front of them," Cain said. "We've been having 3 long weeks on the road traveling to finally get back home and see a familiar face and put on a show."

At 1-2, Birmingham needs to clean up the mental mistakes and execution issues that have plagued them through three weeks, but the foundation for improvement appears to be there if they can harness their obvious talent.
