Dallas Coach Rick Neuheisel Admits Defensive Struggles After Blowing Late Lead to Louisville

Dallas Renegades coach Rick Neuheisel didn't sugarcoat his team's defensive collapse after watching a 17-16 fourth-quarter lead slip away in a 37-23 loss to Louisville. The Renegades were outgained by nearly 300 yards and went 1-for-10 on third downs in a performance that officially ended their playoff hopes.

"What didn't go wrong on that end, I think, is probably the quicker answer," Neuheisel said when asked about giving up 471 total yards to the Kings. "We didn't play well on defense, truth be told."

Third Down Nightmares Sink Dallas

The Renegades couldn't stay on the field when it mattered most, converting just one of 10 third-down attempts. Neuheisel pointed to Louisville's pass rush as a major factor in disrupting their rhythm.

"They got a quarterback off his spot often. Poor Austin was on the run and we just didn't make enough plays out of the pocket," Neuheisel explained.

The coach admitted his team had opportunities downfield but couldn't execute when the pressure mounted. Dallas managed to take a 17-16 lead in the fourth quarter, giving them hope they could steal a road victory.

Defense Gets Picked Apart

While Dallas forced a couple of turnovers and made a goal-line stand, those bright spots were overshadowed by consistent breakdowns. Louisville averaged just under 8 yards per play, carving up a Renegades defense that has struggled all season in obvious passing situations.

"The third down and long situations have been just a nightmare for us. We give up third and 11, third and 12. Far too often to be considered a championship-caliber team," Neuheisel said.

The coach emphasized that both players and coaches need to look in the mirror after such a comprehensive defensive failure.

Kings' Home Field Advantage on Display

Despite the disappointing result, Neuheisel had nothing but praise for Louisville's venue and fanbase. The atmosphere at Lynn Family Stadium clearly provided an extra boost for the Kings in their crucial victory.

"Let me just also say that this town of Louisville is a fantastic venue for this league. The fans were great behind their home team, and I hope they keep it up because it's a really cool place to play," Neuheisel said.

Season Ends on Sour Note

The loss drops Dallas to 3-6 and officially eliminates them from playoff contention. Neuheisel acknowledged that Louisville was simply the better team when the game was on the line, praising Chris Redman's squad for their fourth-quarter execution.

Dallas will look to salvage some pride in their season finale against St. Louis, but the focus now shifts to addressing the defensive issues that have plagued them throughout 2026.
