The Orlando Storm made history Saturday night, blanking Birmingham 16-0 for the first shutout in UFL history while improving to a perfect 4-0. But the real story came Sunday, when head coach Anthony Becht revealed the emotional reasoning behind trading away talented backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
"It just made me sick that I had this guy and selfishly it's nice to have a great backup, but this is a league of opportunity," Becht said during his weekly press conference. "When it's the quarterback position, it's ultimately so critical, especially for a guy that's been in the league multiple years now, to get the film that he needs to show what he can do."
A Coach's Conscience Drives Blockbuster Trade
The Storm sent DTR to Birmingham in exchange for quarterback Matt Corral and defensive lineman Amani Bledsoe, but Becht made it clear the move wasn't about improving his roster—it was about doing right by a player.
"DTR is a starting quarterback in this league. He's a phenomenal talent. I keep saying this one, shame on the league for not being picking him on their team because again, I got him after I got Jack. I got a lot of respect for DTR. He's been a consummate pro. I've never seen anybody handle their scenario and situation as well as he has."
Becht praised Thompson-Robinson's professionalism throughout the quarterback competition that Jack Plummer ultimately won. The coach couldn't give DTR enough credit for his attitude and contributions even as a backup.
Defense Makes History Behind Donnie Abraham's Scheme
While the trade dominated headlines, Orlando's dominant defensive performance shouldn't be overlooked. Defensive coordinator Donnie Abraham orchestrated the league's first shutout, holding Birmingham to just 179 total yards on their home field in front of 18,000 fans.
"Nobody has more defensive film and scheme in our league than Donnie Abraham does," Becht said. "We all know how hard it is with the scoring and the different ways to score in our league to shut a team out."
The secondary particularly stepped up after Becht challenged them following their inconsistent performance against Louisville. Safeties Jim Mahoney, Mishael Powell, and Josh Minkins all finished in the top four in tackles, flying around the field making play after play.
Plummer Channels His Inner Chad Pennington
When asked which NFL quarterback Plummer reminds him of most, Becht didn't hesitate: Chad Pennington. The comparison goes beyond their similar skill sets to their command of the huddle and understanding of the game.
"He's a commander of the huddle, a commander of the operation, and a guy that understands the task at hand," Becht explained. "He understands completion percentage. He understands get the ball to the weapons and he's fearless."
Plummer added a rushing dimension that surprised even his coach, who noted the quarterback's college rushing stats were in the negative. But in Orlando's system, Plummer has found ways to extend plays and create opportunities with his legs.
Storm Eye Orlando Support With Massive Promotion
Sitting alone atop the UFL at 4-0, Becht made an impassioned plea for Orlando fans to give his team a shot. The Storm are offering 40% off already discounted tickets and $4 beers from gate opening to kickoff for their upcoming home games.
"There's no reason why we can't get 15,000, 20,000 fans in a game. Why not? UCF fans, Valencia, wherever you're at, there's so many folks around. Like, this is a fun time. It's a great experience."
The coach acknowledged the challenge of competing with the Orlando Magic's successful season but believes his undefeated team has earned the community's attention. With two straight home games coming up, including a matchup against Becht's former team St. Louis, the timing couldn't be better.
Emotional Reunion Awaits Against Former Players
Saturday's game against St. Louis carries extra meaning for Becht, who will coach against several former players including Hakeem Butler, Travis Feeney, and others who were "foundational players" in his previous coaching stint.
"I entrusted those guys to help build something that people will remember and will stick in the city of St. Louis," Becht said. "The flip side of that story is they're the hunted now. They're the ones that we need to stop."
The Storm enter the week as the league's only undefeated team, riding a wave of defensive dominance and offensive efficiency that has them positioned as the early favorite for the playoffs. With Bledsoe adding depth to an already strong defensive line and the emotional DTR chapter closed, Orlando looks ready to continue their historic run.
