New Indoor Football League franchise owned by iconic sports figures unveils name and distinctive logo ahead of inaugural 2027 season
The Indoor Football League's newest franchise officially has a name.
The Athens Crush unveiled its team name and logo Wednesday as the organization continues preparations for its inaugural IFL season in 2027. The Crush will begin play in March at Akins Ford Arena in Athens, Georgia.
Athens was awarded an IFL expansion franchise earlier this year and will be one of four new teams joining the league for the 2027 season. The franchise is led by an ownership group featuring Pro Football Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion Jerome "The Bus" Bettis, University of Georgia football legend and College Football Hall of Famer David Pollack, and former Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons standout Brian Jordan.
"We wanted a name that was powerful, memorable, and uniquely Athens," Athens Crush President and CEO Mike Sammond said. "The Crush represents the energy, toughness, and excitement we want to bring to the arena every night. It gives us tremendous opportunities to build a fun, creative brand around football while connecting with the personality and spirit of Athens."
A NAME CONNECTED TO ATHENS
The Crush name was designed to reflect the personality of the Athens community while also paying homage to the city's rich musical history. The name includes a subtle connection to R.E.M. and the band's song "Orange Crush," tying the franchise to one of the most recognizable pieces of Athens' legendary music scene.
That connection, however, does not extend to the team's colors.
Despite the inspiration behind the name, orange was never seriously considered for the Crush color palette, particularly with a group of passionate Georgia football fans and alumni leading the organization.
"With a team owned by a bunch of passionate Georgia football fans and alums, there was one color that was never going to make the cut," Pollack said. "In Athens, orange is associated with our biggest college football rivals, and that's one color we would never ever wear."
A LOGO BUILT FOR THE CLASSIC CITY
The newly unveiled Crush logo incorporates several elements tied directly to Athens and the surrounding community.
At the center of the design is a bold capital "A" representing Athens, appearing to be fractured, or "crushed," by a set of powerful dinosaur claws. The logo also incorporates the state of Georgia, the iconic UGA Arch and musical references honoring Athens' music history.
The dinosaur element will extend beyond the primary logo and provide the franchise with opportunities to develop a mascot and additional branding aimed at connecting with younger fans and families.
"Once we settled on the Crush name, we realized the brand could become much bigger than football," Sammond said. "The dinosaur gives us an incredible opportunity to create a mascot and an entire world around the team that will appeal to kids and families, while the logo itself incorporates elements that make it unmistakably Athens."
BUILDING TOWARD 2027
The Crush will play eight regular-season home games at Akins Ford Arena during its inaugural season and have already begun building their football operations, front office and community partnerships.
Rob Keefe will lead the franchise as its inaugural Head Coach and Director of Football Operations. Keefe brings championship experience to Athens after leading the Bay Area Panthers to the 2023 IFL National Championship.
"We want the Athens Crush to become more than a football team," Bettis said. "We want it to become part of the fabric of this community - a place where families come together, businesses connect, kids meet their heroes, and the entire Athens area has something to look forward to on game day."
With the team name and identity now officially unveiled, Athens will turn its attention toward building its inaugural roster, expanding its presence throughout the community and preparing for kickoff in March 2027.
The Athens Crush are one of four expansion franchises set to join the Indoor Football League for the 2027 season.
