What Dallas Renegades' Stunning Luis Perez Trade Means Moving Forward in 2026

Well, it appears the UFL was not done making trades involving quarterbacks quite yet as the Dallas Renegades got in on the action.

PFN's James Larsen reported that the Renegades traded Luis Perez to the St. Louis Battlehawks in exchange for offensive tackle Corey Stewart. This move was made as Larsen noted that Battlehawks backup quarterback Michael Pratt is injured and St. Louis needed to add a third quarterback.

Perez has been with the Renegades since being traded midway through the 2023 XFL season from the Vegas Vipers, helping lead Dallas to a league title. In 20 UFL games, he has thrown for 4,605 yards and 27 touchdowns, with nine interceptions.

As for Stewart, he has been the backup left tackle for the Battlehawks this season. He previously played for the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL and attended Purdue and Ball State in college.

Luis Perez departs the Renegades after three years in Dallas

This was an expected outcome with Perez being beaten out by Austin Reed for the starting quarterback job this year. It didn't help Perez at all that Reed is playing like one of the top two quarterbacks in the UFL, as he is the leader in passing yards (907) and passing touchdowns (11).

Perez has built quite a reputation in spring football, earning the nickname "The Spring King" after playing in every major spring football league since 2019, including the AAF, XFL, TSL, USFL, and UFL. In all those leagues, he was always considered to be one of the top passers and got better every year.

Now the Renegades face Luke Lehnen as the new backup quarterback to Reed. Dallas will have to act quickly to find a third quarterback on the depth chart. Otherwise, they could look at wide receiver Greg Ward Jr. as the emergency third-string quarterback based on his prior experience at the position.

Dallas also gets a nice boost on the offensive line, with Stewart adding depth to the group. Alex Akingbulu should still hold his spot as the starting left tackle for the time being.

This is a seismic trade made in the league that might help the Battlehawks turn their season around at 2-2, but it's a bittersweet ending to Perez's time as a Renegade. The fan favorite is gone, but the 3-1 Dallas Renegades are still on track to be in the playoff hunt as the focus shifts to the Louisville Kings in Week 5 for the final home game of the season.
